"CHANGE ICON" and SAVE AS (or maybe it was EXPORT as) .icl
Published on June 8, 2005 By lpworld In IconPackager
FIRST OF ALL the following conte

FIRST OF ALL the following context has nothing to do with "IconBuilder."  This is in regards to IconPackager's interface.

What changed in the recent updates to IconPackager?  I am convinced some features have been removed.  I read the "history" versions of IconPackager -- however the information is limited to the usual bug/s removal and added components to the application.
I noticed there have been so many updates lately to the program. I believe one of those updates removed some excellent features.

Please confirm the following so I do not spend any more time racking my brain trying to figure out why I some of these features worked before but now they do not.

1. In a prior version did you have the option to SAVE AS or Export as... an icon library from one of the opened packages?

2. "CHANGE ICON" use to work within IconPackager's "Icons and Cursors" window.

i.e.  If I did not like the shortcut symbol from one package I would select "CHANGE ICON."  I then browsed to another package & used their shortcut and selected "Apply."  Now when I follow these steps all I see is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark.  Was this featured removed?

By the way, I never used or was aware of "IconBuilder" until recently from another post. I know I was able to complete the tasks above within IconPackager because I have customized a number of older packages to fit my desktop needs.

IS there anyway I can go back to version 2.96 beta?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

1. I'm using 2.5, and there is no export function. Save package as... allows you save Icon Package files only.

2. You are correct.

You can go back to 2.96 if you have auto archiving turned on. Right click IP in SDC and select Restore Archive...........

For the "Save as" .icl or "Export to" .ico or .cur or .bmp you must use the Icon Explorer application. Just click on the Icons Explore button. Was that was before and still is with 3.0.

NOW I am really bummed. I had just recently turned on Auto Archiving with version 2.99a and that version doesn't support "CHANGE ICON."

IS there any other way to get version 2.96 beta back? Can another member send it to me or is it ALL through your Network?

IF SO, that's such a shame. Why on earth would you have removed that feature?

lpworld, if you open Icon Packager and click on the "Icons and Cursors" tab, it will show you the icons in a package by a row of tabs on the top of the window...Desktop, Start, Folders, etc. On the bottome there is a "Change Icon" button allowing you to browse other packages or anywhere on your computer to change the icon.Hope that helps and Try not using such a damn big font next time.

Ha, ha, ha, ha… no problem on the font thing. I have all my fonts set to view really small on my computer so that must be the problem.

Anyway... as confirmed above -- Stardock REMOVED the feature "Change Icon." In IconPackager. I use to use that feature all the time to mix and match packages to fit my desktop needs.

In addition FORGET about IconPackage Builder. That program won't let you alter or mix and match any of the pre-made icon packages downloaded from WinCustomize. The program is truly USELESS. I must be tired, I am usually not so blunt.
Thanks for the tip anyway.

Hmmm....seems I just showed you where it is. It's not removed and I have the newest version. It may not be where it used to be, I never used it much, but it is where I said in comment #4.

Also, to change the icons in a package you are not using, just click on the icon package you want to change icons in and hit the load button, then when you click on the icons and cursors button, it will display the icons in that new package.

lpworld,

1. You can use export image/copy image featurs from the right-click context menu within the main Icons & Cursors sections (just right-click on say My Computer), or even from the package Preview window.

2. Remove the change icon feature? There is a button in the Icons and Cursors main section to Change Icon, or simply double-click on the item you want to change.

Brian,
1. You are correct regarding export image/copy feature. Unfortunately I am trying to export as an .ip or .icl file.

2. IF you are running the LATEST version of IconPackager (2.99a or 2.99b) try actually using the feature "Change Icon."

If you are at the "Icons and Cursors" window, and select "Change Icon" it goes through the steps like it is working (opening the browser to let you search for another icon etc.),
but when you select "Apply" -- nothing happens except for you will get a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark where the new icon was suppose to go. It never displays the new icon.

In addition, Wizop Koasati confirmed this with thread #1.
Thank you for response.

I was getting the same result (yellow triangle) when I tried to change an icon. It was even worse as got a error message and it shut down when I clicked on preview or load. However updated to version 3.00.89 and I can now change icons plus load and preview are working again.

I also updated to 3.00.89 today.

No problem changing individual icons via the "Icons and Cursors" category dialog.

Note - I updated after returning windows to the default "Luna" theme. Not sure if it really matters, but it worked great.

Excellent! Thanks for testing! I will give the new version a try!

lpworld,

1. If your trying to export as an *.ip file then simply right-click on a theme within the Packages window and select Zip Package (or File > Zip Package). The main IconPackager program itself wont allow you to save directly to an ICL file. You will need to use IconExplorer to do this.

2. My next suggestion was going to be to install the latest version. We had some file distribution problems with a couple of the beta versions where the incorrect version of common.dll was being installed and causing the problem with the change icon dialog. This should now be resolved.

Brian,
You are right. The NEW version of IP is perfect. No complaints. Thanks again to all!
